James Gunn Clarifies Sinqua Walls' Role: No Green Lantern in Live-Action 'Superman'

In the fast-paced, rumor-fueled world of superhero cinema, it's all too easy for a tidbit of information to spiral into full-blown fan speculation. And lately, the DC Universe has been a hotbed for such discussions, especially with James Gunn and Peter Safran charting an exciting new course. A recent buzz had many fans convinced that actor Sinqua Walls was set to don the iconic Green Lantern ring as John Stewart in Gunn's highly anticipated live-action Superman film. Well, leave it to James Gunn himself to clear the air, as he often does, directly addressing the rumors and setting the record straight.

Taking to social media, Gunn unequivocally stated that while Sinqua Walls is indeed an "amazing actor," he will absolutely not be playing John Stewart in the upcoming Superman movie. He further clarified that the role of John Stewart for the live-action DCU hasn't even been cast yet. So, if you were imagining Walls soaring through Metropolis with a power ring, you might need to recalibrate those daydreams for now. But where, you might ask, did all this speculation come from?

It seems a bit of wires got crossed, which is perfectly understandable given the various DC projects in the pipeline. Walls is, in fact, voicing John Stewart. However, this is for the animated feature, Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part Three. This particular animated film belongs to the "Tomorrowverse" continuity, which is entirely separate from the live-action DC Universe that Gunn and Safran are meticulously building. It’s easy to see how that mix-up happened, right? An actor plays a character in one DC medium, and the next thing you know, the internet is convinced they’re making the jump to the big screen.

Speaking of Superman, the film – which was formerly known as Superman: Legacy – is set to kick off the new cinematic DCU with a bang. Gunn is not only producing but also directing this pivotal entry, promising a fresh take on the Man of Steel. This distinction between the animated "Tomorrowverse" and the live-action DCU is super important for fans to keep in mind as the new DC slate unfolds. While Sinqua Walls won't be flying into theaters as John Stewart, the Green Lantern character is very much a part of the DCU's future plans. John Stewart is slated to appear in the highly anticipated Lanterns series for HBO Max, meaning a live-action casting will happen eventually.
