Yankees Update: Jazz Chisholm Jr. Set to Return, Ryan Weathers Probably Skips Regular‑Season Finale

Manager Aaron Boone gave fans a quick health status report on Friday before the series opener in Arizona. The big news? Second‑baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. is slated to rejoin the roster during the Yankees’ last home stretch, which kicks off Tuesday against the Rays.

Chisholm landed on the 10‑day injured list on Sept. 10 after a thumb sprain – a painful jam when he slid head‑first into second. Since then, he’s been steadying his swing, logging his fourth consecutive day of hitting in the bullpen, and has already taken some light throwing. Boone said the youngster is “really close” to being game‑ready.

Before the thumb injury, Chisholm was on a tear: .375/.464/.500 with a homer over his last seven games. He’s finishing the season at .232/.312/.403 with 19 home runs, 40 steals and 55 RBIs. His return could shake up the infield mix. Max Schuemann is expected to step in at first base for Aaron Judge, while Anthony Volpe has been covering second base in Chisholm’s absence. How Boone balances playing time between Volpe and a freshly activated Chisholm will be an interesting subplot.

On the pitching side, left‑hander Ryan Weathers is unlikely to see any action before the regular season ends. He’s been nursing a left forearm flexor strain since late August. Although he’s made progress, Boone believes there isn’t enough calendar space to bring him back before the postseason. Weathers will have another bullpen session Saturday, and that may determine if he becomes a playoff option.

Weathers posted a respectable 3.60 ERA and 1.22 WHIP over 25 starts this year. Even more impressive, his last seven outings were a 2.27 ERA with a 1.18 WHIP, suggesting he could be a useful depth piece if he’s cleared.

Outfielder Trent Grisham is also edging toward activation. The veteran suffered a right hamstring strain on Sept. 5 – the same injury that sidelined him in June – but Boone says his running program is “pretty far” along. If Grisham gets cleared during the homestand, the Yankees will again need to juggle roster spots, as Spencer Jones and Heliot Ramos have filled his role. Grisham’s slash line sits at .211/.308/.395 with a .703 OPS over 121 games.
