There’s a distinct buzz in the air around West Virginia University athletics these days, and much of it centers squarely on Wren Baker. Our athletic director, who only stepped into the role in late 2022, has truly seen his star rise. It's a testament to his leadership that, even after a relatively short time, University President Michael T. Benson is making the university's position unequivocally clear: they're not letting go of Wren Baker. Not now, not anytime soon. "Our commitment to him is clear," Benson stated recently, and frankly, that’s a powerful message, especially given the dynamic and often tumultuous world of college sports leadership.

Our baseball team even made a memorable run to the semifinals of the College World Series. And speaking of basketball, the men's program, under new hire Ross Hodge, didn’t just win 21 games in year one, but also secured a top-15 recruiting class. It’s a remarkable turnaround, really. Beyond these marquee sports, we've seen the continued strength of our soccer programs, the consistent excellence of rifle, and the upward trajectory of wrestling, golf, and volleyball. It just goes to show, Baker isn’t just focused on the biggest programs; he’s nurturing success across the board.

So, what’s the secret sauce? President Benson points to a few key ingredients. Baker’s knack for fundraising is absolutely stellar; it’s a critical piece of the puzzle for any successful athletic program today. He also has an incredible eye for talent when it comes to hiring coaches, and perhaps just as importantly, he builds genuine rapport with them. Not just with the coaches, but also with our student-athletes. It’s that blend of financial acumen, strategic vision, and human touch that sets him apart. Benson’s words were full of praise, highlighting Baker's ability to engage with people and inspire confidence, all while keeping the athletic department moving forward during what could have been a very turbulent period.

The message is loud and clear: West Virginia University sees Wren Baker not just as an athletic director, but as a foundational pillar for its athletic future. His profile is undoubtedly rising, and with success comes interest from other programs, of course. But the firm stance from President Benson, combined with the tangible achievements and the clear positive trajectory of WVU athletics under his watch, signals a stable and exciting path ahead.
