Woman in critical condition after falling out of Edmonton Transit bus

Article content A 63 year old woman is in hospital with critical injuries after falling out the rear door of an Edmonton Transit bus, police say. The strange accident occurred on Friday afternoon before 3 p.m. at the intersection of 174 Street and 95 Avenue, police said in a Sunday news release. Police said the bus was turning east onto 95 Avenue — north of West Edmonton Mall — when the passenger stood up and began moving to the rear door.

She was reportedly reaching for and grabbing onto a safety bar, but then lost her balance as the bus was turning. She fell backwards through the door and onto the street. An ambulance crew took the woman to hospital with injuries classified as serious, police said, but her condition has since declined to critical.

She remained in hospital Sunday. Police are still investigating but no charges are pending at the moment, the release said. The release did not provide any details on how the back door opened while the bus was still moving. Requests to Edmonton Transit for comment were not immediately returned Sunday..
