Wildfire Crisis Deepens: BC Wildfire Service Faces Imminent Strike Amid Record Season

British Columbia is grappling with an unprecedented wildfire season, witnessing over 2.3 million hectares succumb to flames. Yet, as the province battles this escalating inferno, a new and alarming threat looms: a looming strike by the BC General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) against the BC Wildfire Service.

The BCGEU has formally served a strike notice, with job action set to commence on Monday at 8 a.m.

Duane Nickull, president of the BCGEU, articulated the union's frustration: “The work is hard, often dangerous, and the job never stops for months on end during fire season.

Our members have been clear for years that the BC government needs to come to the table with a fair contract that recognizes their hard work and ensures they have the support they need.” The union insists that a fair contract is not just about wages but about acknowledging the immense physical and psychological burden shouldered by its members.

While essential services, such as direct fire suppression, are expected to continue, the strike notice could lead to picket lines at various BC Wildfire Service facilities.

This could severely disrupt crucial support operations—ranging from equipment maintenance and logistics to administrative functions—that are vital for a coordinated and effective wildfire response. Any delay or interruption in these ancillary services could have far-reaching consequences for the efficacy of fire suppression efforts.

The Ministry of Forests, responsible for the BC Wildfire Service, expressed disappointment over the strike notice.

Minister Bruce Ralston affirmed the government’s commitment to achieving a fair settlement and highlighted that tentative agreements had been reached with other BCGEU bargaining units. However, the general service bargaining unit, to which wildfire service members belong, rejected an earlier tentative agreement in April, following a 94 percent strike vote in March.

Members have been without a contract since March 31, 2024, and a subsequent 'cooling off' period concluded in June without a resolution.

As British Columbia navigates its most challenging wildfire season yet, the prospect of a labor dispute adds a layer of complexity and concern.
