Wife's Relentless Fight Forces Stronger Charges in Haryana Cop's Suicide Case

In a significant development stemming from the tragic suicide of a Haryana Police constable, Manoj Kumar, authorities have been compelled to add more stringent charges against three senior police officers. This pivotal turn comes after Manoj's widow, Suman, mounted a courageous and persistent protest, challenging what she perceived as a diluted First Information Report (FIR) initially filed by the police.

Suman's unwavering resolve saw her stage a demonstration outside the Jind Superintendent of Police's office.

Her grievance was clear: the original FIR, filed under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code, fell short of addressing the full extent of alleged misconduct by the accused officers. She firmly believed that the initial charges were an attempt to protect the accused and dilute the seriousness of the circumstances that led to her husband's death.

Following her insistent pleas and public pressure, the police have now incorporated Sections 384 (extortion), 342 (wrongful confinement), and 166-A (public servant disobeying law) into the FIR. The three officers implicated in this deepening investigation are DSP Vinod Shankar, Inspector Hariom, and sub-inspector (SI) Kewal Singh.

Constable Manoj Kumar, who was assigned to the CIA-2 unit in Jind, tragically took his own life on October 25. His suicide note, a poignant and damning testament, directly accused these three officers, alleging severe harassment and the demand for illicit money.

Suman's struggle highlighted a critical flaw in the initial police response.
