In the latest episode of Lexicon, Salar al Khafaji – the founder and CEO of Monumental – explained why he believes the construction industry has been, frankly, ignored by most tech entrepreneurs. “Construction is really, really big,” he said, pointing out that productivity has barely budged in decades while housing costs keep soaring.
Al Khafaji’s background isn’t what you’d expect for a construction visionary. He previously built Silk, a data‑visualisation startup later snapped up by Palantir. “I realised that dashboards on a screen weren’t enough,” he told us. “I wanted something I could touch, something that would actually change the skyline.”
Monumental’s answer is a fleet of autonomous machines that transport materials and, more importantly, actually build brick walls. The challenge, though, is that a construction site is anything but a clean laboratory. Light shifts, rain pours, dust settles, and every brick is a little different – some even look like bananas.
To get their robots up to speed, Monumental collected data from every single brick laid during early trials. Mortar adds another layer of complexity. It’s a non‑Newtonian fluid, meaning its consistency changes with temperature, humidity and the pressure applied. Monumental equips its robots with load sensors that constantly monitor how hard they’re pressing, adjusting the flow of mortar in real time. “We’re basically teaching a robot to feel,” al Khafaji said.
Human masons have centuries‑old intuition about dealing with “banana bricks” – those that are chipped or oddly shaped. The software tries to emulate that know‑how: it can rotate a misshapen brick so the most attractive face shows on the wall, just as a seasoned bricklayer would. The result is a wall that looks as good as one built by a human, but with the consistency of a machine.
Speed isn’t the only metric Monumental cares about. A single robot can lay about as many bricks in a shift as a skilled mason, but the goal isn’t to replace people with a dozen wheelbarrows full of bricks. “If you have a robot and a human both doing the dumb part, you’re not gaining anything,” al Khafaji argued. Instead, the robot handles the heavy, repetitive work while the human focuses on the craft that makes masonry beautiful.
Monumental sells walls, not robots. To contractors, the promise is simple: deliver a wall that meets the agreed‑upon specs, schedule and price – regardless of how it’s built. The company even pledged to hire human masons at its own expense if the technology ever fell short, putting the risk squarely on their shoulders.
Beyond the physical bricks, the robots generate a digital twin of the entire build. Before the first shovel hits the ground, Monumental can simulate the project, calculate exactly how many robots are needed and forecast material deliveries. On‑site, a 3‑D model is constantly compared with the architect’s plans, allowing the system to tweak joint sizes or swap bricks on the fly if something’s off by a few millimetres.
When the job is done, Monumental can hand the owner a detailed report listing every single brick laid, its location and any adjustments made. This level of traceability is unprecedented in traditional construction and could become the new standard for quality control.
So, are we heading toward fully autonomous bricklayers? Probably not tomorrow, but the groundwork is being laid – literally. As the technology matures, the hope is that housing becomes cheaper, construction faster, and the skill of the mason is preserved rather than erased.
