Culture, too, plays a subtle role. In several European countries, there’s a lingering belief that academia and industry should stay separate. That mindset, while preserving scientific purity, can also create an invisible wall that discourages collaboration.

These examples show that when the right ingredients – funding, mentorship, and a supportive regulatory environment – come together, Europe can produce not just great science, but great businesses.
So what’s the way forward? A few ideas keep popping up in policy circles: harmonise funding mechanisms across member states, streamline regulatory pathways, give TTOs the resources they need, and nurture a culture that celebrates entrepreneurial risk as much as academic rigor. If Europe can pull these levers, the continent’s scientific brilliance could finally shine through in the marketplace.
