Meet Megan – not her real name – a woman in her forties who, after a breast‑cancer diagnosis and months of chemotherapy, started forgetting simple things like people’s names or where she set her keys. The so‑called “chemo brain” left her feeling scattered, and long, dense instructions on a webpage turned into a nightmare.

She isn’t alone. In the United States more than 18 million people consider themselves cancer survivors. Roughly 70 % of them report lasting functional limitations – almost double the rate in the general population. Those limitations aren’t only physical; they can be cognitive, visual, or even affect fine‑motor skills.

In our own lab we’re piloting a “chemo‑brain” game that teaches students how to build interfaces that respect memory lapses and visual strain. Co‑design not only yields better products; it signals respect for a community that is often invisible to tech teams.

Future, larger‑scale research could tease apart how different cancers and treatment combos affect digital interaction – does a brain‑tumour survivor struggle differently than someone treated only with chemo? Do income, age or tech‑savviness amplify the barriers?

As medical advances push survival rates higher, the conversation must shift from “I beat cancer” to “how can I live well now?” Accessible technology is a vital piece of that puzzle. When we build apps, websites and devices with survivors in mind, we’re not just complying with guidelines – we’re restoring independence, confidence, and a sense of belonging for millions.
