West Bengal Moves IPS Officer Bushra Bano After ‘Assalamualaikum’ Video Sparks Outcry

On September 13, an IPS officer named Bushra Bano posted a short clip on X (formerly Twitter) where she recounted her journey through the UPSC exams. In the video she thanked Aligarh Muslim University’s Residential Coaching Academy for its role in her preparation and, quite naturally, peppered her speech with familiar Islamic expressions – “Assalamualaikum,” “Inshallah,” and “Jazakallah.”

The post was meant to be a personal celebration, but it quickly caught the eye of a few right‑wing social media accounts. Those groups argued that using religious salutations in an official‑capacity communication was inappropriate, and the story soon snowballed into a political row.

Within days, the West Bengal government decided to move Bano. Previously she was serving as Additional Superintendent of Police in Kharagpur. The transfer places her as Deputy Commandant of the West Bengal Armed Police – a role that, while still senior, is a clear shift away from field policing duties.

Opposition voices, notably Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, slammed the decision as a reactionary over‑reach. Moitra asked why a simple greeting should trigger a bureaucratic reshuffle, suggesting the move was more about appeasing vocal sections of the electorate than about any breach of protocol.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s administration, on the other hand, has been tight‑lipped, offering no detailed justification beyond a generic statement about maintaining “public confidence” in the police force. Critics argue that the silence only fuels speculation that the transfer was a political gesture aimed at curbing perceived religious expression.

The episode adds another chapter to the ongoing cultural tussles playing out in West Bengal’s political arena, where language, religion and authority often intersect in heated debate.
