Boater taken to hospital after wave capsizes vessel off Nahant
A sudden wave at East Point in Nahant sent two people into the water on Saturday. One was rescued unconscious and rushed to Salem Hospital while officials investigate.
Early Saturday afternoon, about 1:04 p.m., a routine outing turned chaotic off East Point in Nahant, Massachusetts. One boat apparently lost power, and another vessel drifted over to lend a hand.
Just then a sizable wave rolled in, slamming both boats. The impact tossed the two occupants into the chilly Atlantic. One managed to scramble back onto the deck, but the other struggled, even though a life vest was on.
According to the Nahant Fire Department, the second boater became unresponsive while trying to swim. Firefighters waded in, hauled the person aboard, and began CPR right there on the boat.
After stabilizing the victim, responders ferried the individual to shore and loaded them into an ambulance bound for Salem Hospital. Their condition hasn’t been released yet.
Swampscott’s Fire Department and Harbormaster also showed up, assisting with the rescue and securing the scene. The whole episode is still under investigation.
