VVS Laxman to Guide Indian Men's Cricket Team at Asian Games 2026 in Japan

Well, cricket fans, mark your calendars! The much-anticipated Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, are fast approaching, and we’ve got some exciting news regarding India’s cricket contingent. It seems the venerable VVS Laxman, a name synonymous with elegant batting and astute cricketing brains, is all set to take the reins as head coach for the Indian men’s team.

It’s a familiar and indeed, very welcome face stepping up for this prestigious event. The Asian Games are slated to run from September 19th to October 4th, 2026, with the men's cricket competition specifically scheduled between September 24th and October 3rd. So, why Laxman? The reason, it turns out, is a bit of a scheduling puzzle. Our regular head coach, Gautam Gambhir, will be quite occupied with the senior team, who are facing the West Indies in a home ODI series running from September 27th to October 3rd, 2026. This crucial overlap paved the way for Laxman, who, as Director of Cricket at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE), is perfectly positioned to step in.

And let's not forget, Laxman isn't new to this particular challenge. He famously coached the Indian men's team to a glorious gold medal at the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, back in 2023. Talk about a tried-and-tested formula, right? Under his guidance, the team will be captained by the talented Shreyas Iyer, a fantastic choice to lead from the front.
