VPD Arrests Man Over Alleged Sexual Assault in Downtown Public Restroom

Vancouver Police Department announced on Thursday that a man has been formally charged with sexual assault following a complaint about an alleged attack inside a men’s public bathroom on Granville Street.

The incident, which reportedly took place on Tuesday night, was brought to officers’ attention after a patron used the facility’s emergency call button and described an unwanted encounter with another individual. The complainant, whose identity is being protected, said the other party made unwelcome physical contact and behaved in an “indecent” manner.

Detectives quickly reviewed footage from surveillance cameras positioned outside the washroom entrance. While the cameras do not capture the interior, they helped pinpoint the suspect’s arrival and departure times. The footage, combined with eyewitness statements, led officers to locate a 32‑year‑old male who matched the description provided.

Police say the suspect was arrested on Wednesday evening at his residence in the Marpole neighbourhood. He is now facing a charge of sexual assault under the Criminal Code and is expected to appear in Vancouver Provincial Court later this month. No bond conditions have been released at this time.

VPD spokesperson Const. Maya Patel reminded the public that incidents of this nature are taken seriously and encouraged anyone who feels unsafe in public facilities to report concerns promptly. “We have resources and support services available for victims, and we’re committed to maintaining safe, accessible spaces for everyone,” Patel said.

The department also noted that it is reviewing security measures in public washrooms city‑wide, including the potential installation of additional panic buttons and clearer signage. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and to call 911 if they witness or experience any form of assault.
