Enter the “Goodbye Thunder Run Party,” a community‑centric bash scheduled for Saturday, August 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Organisers promise a laid‑back vibe with live music from local band The Grainy Wheels, a pop‑up food truck serving classic summer fare, and a nostalgic photo‑wall displaying snapshots of the slide over the years.

“It’s a little piece of our collective childhood,” says Melissa Gilligan, the centre’s programming coordinator. “We wanted families to have a chance to say thank you, share stories, and maybe even sneak in one last ride before it’s gone.” The plan is to keep the slide operational for the day, with staff‑supervised runs limited to 15‑minute intervals to ensure safety.

Local businesses are getting in on the action, too. The nearby downtown bakery is donating cupcakes, while a youth art collective will run a mural‑painting station where kids can leave their own mark on a temporary canvas. There’ll also be a “memory box” where attendees can drop notes, photos, or doodles for the centre to archive.
