Vikram Misri Reviews Milestones of Tamil Nadu’s Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor

Last week, Vikram Misri, the senior official overseeing India’s nuclear programme, paid a site visit to the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu. The trip wasn’t just a ceremonial walk‑through; it was a detailed review of where the project stands after several years of intense work.

Misri noted that the reactor’s civil structures – the massive concrete shield, the turbine hall, and the auxiliary buildings – are now largely complete. He added that the installation of primary piping and reactor modules is progressing “at a comfortable pace,” despite earlier setbacks caused by supply‑chain hiccups and pandemic‑related delays.

One of the key take‑aways from his briefing was the updated timeline. While the original target for achieving criticality was 2022, the realistic window has now shifted to the latter half of 2024. Misri emphasized that this revised schedule still aligns with India’s broader goal of expanding fast‑breeder technology to support long‑term energy security.

He also highlighted the importance of the PFBR as a stepping‑stone for the upcoming 500‑MW Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) and eventually larger commercial fast‑breeder units. “If we get this prototype right, it will pave the way for a whole new generation of reactors that can efficiently use our uranium reserves,” he said.

The visit concluded with a brief interaction with the on‑site engineering team. Misri praised their dedication, noting that morale remains high even as the project pushes toward its final commissioning phase. He promised continued support from the Department of Atomic Energy, ensuring that any technical bottlenecks are swiftly addressed.
