Vijay’s London Meet Scrapped Over Police Safety Concerns

On Tuesday, a throng of enthusiastic fans milled around The Shard, the city’s iconic glass skyscraper, clutching homemade placards and hoping for a fleeting glimpse of Tamil Nadu’s chief minister, C Joseph Vijay. The actor‑turned‑politician, who is in the UK as part of a state delegation, had been slated to step out of his hotel for a brief meet‑and‑greet.

Just as the crowd’s murmurs grew louder, a loudspeaker crackled to life. A member of Vijay’s team announced, in a hurried tone, that the event was being called off. The reason? The Metropolitan Police had raised safety concerns and pointed out that the organisers did not possess the necessary permission for a public appearance at that location.

For many fans, the news hit like a damp squib. “I’ve been waiting for hours, it’s not like the crowds we see back home in Tamil Nadu,” lamented a young supporter, his voice tinged with disappointment. Some had travelled from different parts of the city, only to be told to turn back.

While the fan‑frenzy fizzled, Vijay’s primary purpose in London remained unchanged. The delegation, representing the Tamil Nadu government, has been busy signing a slew of memoranda of understanding worth roughly Rs 12,300 crore. The agreements focus on renewable energy, advanced manufacturing and technology, with the lofty aim of creating more than 9,400 high‑value jobs back in the state.

Officials say the visit, which began on September 10, will wrap up on Wednesday, when Vijay boards a flight back to India. Though the cancelled public appearance sparked a wave of online chatter, the underlying investment drive continues, underscoring the state’s ambition to position itself as a leading hub in Asia.
