You know the one – the eve of a new school year, full of fresh backpacks, sharpened pencils, and nervous energy. But amidst the preparations, a tiny snag appeared that could have made things a bit trickier for our youngest commuters.

It seems the folks tasked with painting those crucial crosswalks and stop lines on Center Road were, shall we say, a little behind schedule. And why? Well, Mother Nature had decided to throw a wrench in the works with some persistent rain, making it impossible for the permanent lines to be laid down by the contractor as planned. With school set to open its doors on Thursday, August 27, for the 2026-27 academic year, this presented a genuine safety concern, particularly for the students headed to Center Road School and Vernon Center Middle School, both accessed directly from Center Road.

But fear not, Vernon residents! Our incredible Department of Public Works (DPW) isn't one to let a little rain, or a contractor delay, stand in the way of student safety. Recognizing the urgency, the DPW team sprang into action with admirable speed and precision. They rolled up their sleeves, grabbed their paint, and got to work, meticulously painting temporary crosswalks and stop lines at the vital intersection of Center Road and Crestridge Drive.

This swift, proactive move by the Vernon DPW meant that when Thursday morning arrived, those young feet had clear, designated paths to follow, and drivers knew exactly where to stop.
