Uttarakhand's Chamoli Reels as Catastrophic Cloudburst Unleashes Fury, Leaving Devastation in its Wake

A terrifying scene of destruction unfolded in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district early Friday morning as a ferocious cloudburst unleashed its fury, triggering massive landslides and leaving a trail of devastation. The relentless deluge, which struck areas including Pipalkoti and Narkota, washed away multiple houses and left an unspecified number of residents feared missing, plunging the region into a state of panic and despair.

Eyewitnesses described a nightmare scenario as walls of water, mud, and debris surged through villages.

In Narkota, particularly hard hit, reports indicate that between five to six individuals are missing, including a family of three whose homes were swallowed by the raging torrent. The sheer power of the cloudburst left behind a landscape of ruin, with roads submerged and properties reduced to rubble.

The immediate aftermath saw an alarming rise in the water levels of the Alaknanda and Pindar rivers, both flowing dangerously close to the warning mark.

This surge intensified fears of further flash floods, posing an additional threat to communities downstream. Key infrastructure also suffered severe blows; the Pipalkoti-Garudganga bridge, a vital link on the Badrinath National Highway, sustained extensive damage, while a crucial bridge connecting Chamoli to Pipalkoti completely collapsed, severing critical routes and hampering immediate relief efforts.

Responding swiftly to the unfolding tragedy, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams, alongside the district administration and local police, immediately launched intensive rescue and relief operations.

District Magistrate Himanshu Khurana confirmed the extent of the calamity, emphasizing the urgent need to locate the missing and assess the full scope of damage. A high alert has been issued across the district, mobilizing all available resources to manage the crisis.

As rescue personnel navigate treacherous terrain and adverse conditions, the focus remains on finding those trapped or swept away, while also providing aid to the displaced.
