Uttar Pradesh Cracks Down: Eight Slapped with NSA for Bahraich Communal Riots

In a decisive move to curb communal disturbances and ensure robust public order, authorities in Uttar Pradesh have invoked the stringent National Security Act (NSA) against eight individuals implicated in last year's communal riots in Bahraich. This significant action follows an incident of violence that erupted during a religious procession, sending a clear message regarding the state's zero-tolerance policy towards such acts.

The disturbances, which marred the Barawafat procession in October of last year, occurred within the Kotwali Nanpara area of Bahraich.

What began as a religious observance unfortunately escalated into clashes, prompting immediate police intervention to restore peace and order.

Following the unrest, law enforcement agencies launched a comprehensive investigation, leading to the initial arrest of 19 individuals. After thorough review and assessment, eight of these individuals have now been charged under the formidable provisions of the National Security Act.

This particular law allows for preventive detention for up to 12 months, aimed at preventing individuals from committing acts that could be prejudicial to national security or public order.

Additional Superintendent of Police Pavitra Mohan Tripathi highlighted the gravity of the charges, confirming that Mohammad Kalam, Mohammad Danish, Mohammad Aslam, Mohammad Irfan, Mohammad Shamim, Mohammad Salman, Mohammad Jameel, and Mohammad Kamran are the eight individuals now facing detention under the NSA.

The decision to apply the NSA underscores the administration’s determination to ensure that those who disrupt communal harmony and incite violence are held accountable and prevented from repeating such offenses.

Superintendent of Police Prashant Verma previously emphasized the commitment of the Bahraich police to maintain peace and order, particularly during sensitive periods.

The invocation of the NSA serves as a powerful deterrent, reinforcing the state's resolve to protect its citizens and uphold the rule of law against any elements attempting to destabilize societal tranquility.
