Urgent Warning: E. coli Outbreak Linked to Publix GreenWise Frozen Berries Across Eight States

Right now, health officials are sounding the alarm about a concerning multi-state E. coli outbreak, and it’s been linked directly to certain frozen organic blueberries and mixed berries sold under the GreenWise brand at Publix supermarkets.

It’s serious business, folks. So far, at least a dozen people have fallen ill, with four individuals requiring hospitalization. While the contaminated products were distributed across eight states – Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia – the confirmed cases of sickness have primarily been reported in Florida and Georgia. It seems the illnesses first started appearing between May 11th and June 5th of this year, which really shows how tricky these things can be to trace back.

The culprit? We're talking about GreenWise Organic IQF (Individually Quick Frozen) Whole Blueberries and GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries. Initially, a recall was issued for a specific lot of the 10-ounce blueberries back on July 3rd, with a “best by” date of February 9, 2028. But as the investigation deepened, and more cases surfaced, Publix, working with authorities like the FDA and CDC, decided to expand that recall significantly on July 29th. Now, pretty much all sizes of GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries (10-ounce and 48-ounce) and GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries (10-ounce and 48-ounce) are included.

What’s particularly worrisome is that the E. coli strain identified here is O145:H28, a type of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, or STEC. This isn't just your run-of-the-mill stomach bug; it can pack a serious punch. Symptoms can range from severe stomach cramps and nausea to vomiting and diarrhea, which often, alarmingly, can be bloody. These symptoms might not even show up until nine days after you’ve been exposed, making it tough to connect the dots sometimes.

And here’s where it gets truly critical: about 5 to 10 percent of people infected with STEC, especially vulnerable groups like young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems, can develop a severe and potentially life-threatening complication called hemolytic uremic syndrome, or HUS. This condition can lead to kidney failure, so taking this warning seriously is absolutely paramount.

The frozen berries, it turns out, were supplied by Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. from San Carlos, Chile. If you've recently purchased any GreenWise organic frozen blueberries or mixed berries from Publix, especially if you bought them on or before July 3, 2026, please, please do not eat them. Even if they don't seem to match the specific lot code from the initial recall, Publix is urging customers to err on the side of caution and either discard them immediately or return them to the store for a full refund. Your health is simply not worth the risk.
