Urgent Health Alert: Publix GreenWise Frozen Berries Recalled Due to E. coli Outbreak

There's some really concerning news out of Publix stores right now, and it’s something everyone who shops there, especially for frozen fruit, needs to pay close attention to. An urgent recall has been issued for all lots of GreenWise Organic Frozen Whole Blueberries and Mixed Berries. Why? Well, it's linked to an outbreak of E. coli O145:H28, a particularly nasty strain that's already made a number of people quite ill.

This isn't just a precautionary measure; it stems from a confirmed outbreak where twelve individuals across Florida and Georgia have experienced stomach illnesses, with four of them needing hospital care. The illnesses, unfortunately, struck between May 11th and June 5th, 2026. While no deaths have been reported – and thankfully so – the severity of the symptoms certainly highlights the seriousness of this situation. E. coli O145:H28 is a Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), which means it can cause severe abdominal cramps, bloody diarrhea, and even a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) in some cases, especially in young children and the elderly. It’s a scary thought, isn’t it?

Initially, the recall focused on a specific batch of the 10-ounce GreenWise frozen organic blueberries, specifically those with lot code 60401 (or 6040 01) and a best-by date of February 9, 2028. However, as investigations by the FDA, CDC, and the Florida Department of Health deepened, the scope broadened significantly. Now, the recall encompasses all lots of GreenWise Organic Frozen Whole Blueberries, both the 10-ounce (UPC 41415-06453) and the larger 48-ounce (UPC 41415-12053) bags. Not only that, but the GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries, in both 10-ounce (UPC 41415-06753) and 48-ounce (UPC 41415-12153) sizes, are also included. So, if you've got any GreenWise frozen berries from Publix in your freezer, it's really time to check them.

These affected products, supplied by Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. from San Carlos, Chile, were distributed across quite a few states. We’re talking Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. And while those are the confirmed distribution areas, it's always possible that some packages could have traveled further, reaching other states too. Publix, to their credit, acted swiftly once the alarm was raised. By the end of June, they had already pulled these specific products from their shelves, ensuring no new contaminated items were sold.

The timeline here is crucial for understanding how this unfolded. The Florida Department of Health first alerted the CDC about the E. coli illnesses on July 1st. Just two days later, on July 3rd, the initial, narrower recall was issued by the supplier, and Publix promptly advised customers to return or discard any affected blueberries purchased by that date. Fast forward to July 29th, and Publix, in conjunction with regulatory bodies, announced the expanded recall to include all those additional berry products. It shows just how dynamic and serious these food safety investigations can be.

So, what should you do if you have these berries? It's pretty straightforward: do not consume them. Even if they look and smell fine, E. coli contamination isn't visible. The safest bet is to either discard them immediately or return them to your nearest Publix store for a full refund.
