Urgent Health Alert: E. coli Outbreak Linked to Frozen Berries Sparks Expanded Publix Recall

Imagine grabbing some frozen berries, thinking you’re making a healthy choice, only to find out they might be linked to a nasty E. coli outbreak. Well, that’s exactly the unsettling situation unfolding across multiple states right now, centered around certain GreenWise Organic frozen berries sold at Publix. It's a serious matter, and health officials, alongside Publix, are urging consumers to check their freezers immediately.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have confirmed an outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O145, a particularly nasty strain, tied directly to these products. So far, a dozen individuals have fallen ill, with four unfortunately needing hospital care. While thankfully no deaths have been reported, the symptoms of E. coli can be truly debilitating: we're talking severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (which can turn bloody, a very worrying sign), vomiting, and sometimes a fever that just won't quit. Consequently, by July 29, Publix felt it necessary to expand that recall significantly. Now, it includes all lots of their GreenWise Organic Frozen Whole Blueberries, both the 10-ounce (UPC 41415-06453) and the larger 48-ounce bags (UPC 41415-12053). The recall also extends to all lots of GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries, covering both the 10-ounce (UPC 41415-06753) and 48-ounce bags (UPC 41415-12153). That's a pretty broad recall, indicating the gravity of the potential contamination.

These recalled products were distributed to Publix stores across a significant swath of the southeastern United States. If you've shopped at Publix in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, or Virginia, then you absolutely need to double-check your frozen fruit supply. While cases have been confirmed in at least two states (Florida being one), the potential for illness exists wherever these berries were sold.

So, what should you do if you have these berries in your freezer? It's simple: don't eat them. Seriously, just don't. The safest bet is to either toss them out or return them to Publix for a full refund. And, as mentioned, keep a close eye out for symptoms like severe cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, or a high fever, especially if you or someone in your household has consumed these products between May 11 and June 5, 2026, which is the period when illnesses began to pop up.
