Urgent Flood Alert: Ponnai River Surges, Threatening Vellore Villages as Reservoir Discharges Overflow

An urgent and grave flood alert has been sounded for numerous villages nestled along the banks of the Ponnai river in Tamil Nadu’s Vellore district. The situation has become critical following the relentless discharge of surplus water from the Araniyar reservoir in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, a direct consequence of the incessant heavy rainfall lashing the region.

Vellore Collector P Kumaravel Pandian has issued a stern warning, urging residents in the vulnerable communities within Gudiyatham and Pernambut taluks to immediately relocate to safer, higher ground.

The Ponnai river, already swollen and raging from the heavy downpour in its catchment areas, is now bracing for a significant surge as the massive volume of water from the Araniyar dam makes its way downstream.

Authorities are leaving no stone unturned in their preparedness. Revenue officials, police forces, fire and rescue services, and other emergency response teams have been placed on high alert.
