Named after Lord Willingdon, a former Viceroy of India, the island is a monument to the monumental reclamation work undertaken from 1928 onwards, a monumental project conceived and executed by the legendary Chief Engineer Robert Bristow.

Historically, it served as a crucial nerve centre, connecting the mainland via the iconic Mattancherry Bridge. Today, it hosts significant establishments including the Cochin Port Authority (CPA) facilities, a vital naval base, customs offices, and a scattering of hotels and businesses.
