UK Broadens Inquiry into Prince Andrew’s Links with Jeffrey Epstein

The British government announced on Thursday that the public inquiry into Prince Andrew’s ties with the late financier Jeffrey Epstein will now look beyond the original focus on alleged sexual misconduct. Officials said the scope will be widened to scrutinise the prince’s financial dealings, as well as how the royal household handled the fallout.

In a courtroom in London last week, Virginia Giuffre, who has long claimed that she was forced into a sexual relationship with the prince, testified again, describing new details that prompted officials to reconsider the breadth of the investigation. Her statements, combined with fresh documents from the Metropolitan Police, convinced the inquiry’s chair to add a financial strand to the mandate.

“We have a duty to uncover the full picture – from personal conduct to monetary connections – and how the institution responded,” said Sir John Mitting, the inquiry’s chair, speaking to reporters after the hearing. He added that the investigation would now assess whether any gifts, loans, or other financial benefits flowed between the prince and Epstein’s network.

Prince Andrew, who stepped back from public duties in 2019 after the scandal erupted, has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing. In a brief statement, he said he was “cooperating fully” and welcomed the inquiry’s decision to broaden its remit, calling it “the right thing to do”. However, his legal team has warned that further scrutiny could expose “unnecessary speculation”.

The royal household, which has faced criticism for its handling of the case, will also be examined. Critics argue that senior officials failed to act swiftly when the allegations first surfaced, allowing the matter to linger in the public eye for years.
