Two suspects apprehended after championship‑level road bikes vanished from a Montreal hotel garage

It was supposed to be a routine night for the staff at a downtown Montreal hotel that was hosting a cluster of world‑class cyclists. Instead, the garage where the riders stored their prized UCI World Road Championship bikes turned into a crime scene.

According to the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), the theft was discovered early on Tuesday morning when a hotel employee noticed several race‑grade bicycles missing from the locked area. The bikes, valued at tens of thousands of dollars each, were part of a fleet supplied to national teams competing in the week‑long championships.

Within hours, detectives pieced together surveillance footage and identified two men who had entered the garage late the night before. Both were described as being in their late twenties, wearing dark jackets and carrying large duffel bags.

Police tracked the suspects to a nearby neighbourhood and, after a brief pursuit, arrested them without incident. The men are now facing charges that include theft of property over $5,000 and possession of stolen goods. Their identities have not been released pending further investigation.

“We take any criminal activity that impacts athletes, especially during a major international event, very seriously,” said SPVM spokesperson Lieutenant‑Commander Marie‑Claude Bouchard. “Our priority is to recover the bikes and ensure the competitors can focus on the race, not on the loss of their equipment.”

The stolen bicycles are expected to be recovered, officials say, because the championship frames are uniquely marked and registered with the UCI. The incident has sparked a quick reminder to teams and hotels to double‑check security protocols during high‑profile events.

The UCI World Road Championships continue this weekend, with races scheduled through Sunday. Organisers have expressed confidence that the incident will not affect the competition, emphasizing the resilience of the athletes and the support of the local community.
