Two Men Taken Into Custody After Firearms and Narcotics Discovered in the Aftermath of a Winnipeg Traffic Collision

What began as an ordinary evening on Winnipeg’s busy Willow Crescent turned into a police operation that the city won’t soon forget. Around 7:30 p.m. on July 24, officers from the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a two‑vehicle collision that left one driver injured and a battered sedan blocking the lane.

While securing the scene, detectives decided to run a quick background check on the occupants, a routine step they say saved the city a lot of trouble. Their hunch paid off: a hidden compartment in the back seat was discovered, brimming with small‑calibre pistols and a bag of an unidentified white powder. The discovery prompted a broader sweep, and within hours both men involved in the crash were taken into custody.

Detective Sergeant Maria Alvarez, who led the follow‑up, told reporters that “the presence of firearms in a vehicle involved in a traffic collision raises immediate safety concerns, and the addition of illegal drugs made it a clear‑cut case for arrest.” The two individuals, whose names have not yet been released, are now facing charges that include possession of prohibited weapons, possession for the purpose of trafficking and dangerous driving causing bodily injury.

The injured driver, a 32‑year‑old woman, was treated at the Health Sciences Centre for a broken wrist and bruises but is expected to make a full recovery. She was not implicated in the contraband haul and cooperated fully with investigators.

Both suspects are being held at the Winnipeg Remand Centre pending a court appearance next week. If convicted, they could face several years behind bars, especially given the combination of weapons and controlled substances.
