Turlock Fire Engines Get High‑Tech Boost for Road Safety

In a move that feels straight out of a science‑fiction movie, the Turlock Fire Department has begun fitting its fire engines with a new piece of technology called the Safety Cloud, built by Haas Alert. The goal? Simple – give drivers a heads‑up when a fire truck is racing toward an emergency, and in doing so, cut down on the all‑too‑common collisions that can waste precious minutes.

Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Serpa explained the problem in his own words: “Over the past few years we’ve noticed more and more drivers either can’t hear us, can’t see us, or just don’t pull over when they should.” That’s led to an uptick in accidents involving fire engines and, inevitably, longer response times. The Safety Cloud aims to change that by pushing a clear, on‑screen alert through popular navigation platforms like Waze and Apple Maps the moment a fire engine is on the road.

Imagine you’re following directions on your phone, and a bright banner pops up saying, “Emergency vehicle ahead – pull right.” That’s essentially what the system does. It gives motorists a few extra seconds to move aside, which can be the difference between a smooth pass and a sudden screech.

Since the devices were installed on two engines, the numbers speak for themselves. In July alone, the system sent out roughly 3,400 alerts, and in August it logged about 2,700. Those figures suggest that hundreds of drivers are being warned – and hopefully, a lot fewer collisions are happening.

Looking ahead, the fire chief says the department plans to outfit two more engines with the Safety Cloud before the year wraps up. If the early data is any indication, the city’s streets may become a little safer for everyone, especially when seconds matter.

While technology can’t replace good old‑fashioned driver awareness, it does provide a helpful nudge. And for the brave men and women who hop into those fire trucks each day, any edge that helps them get to a blaze faster – and safer – is a welcome one.
