Turlock Fire Department Rolls Out New Tech to Boost Safety

In a move that feels like something out of a sci‑fi movie, the Turlock Fire Department has fitted two of its frontline engines with HAAS Alert’s Safety Cloud. The little box sits on the roof, silently listening for the siren’s wail and then pinging nearby smartphones.

What happens next is surprisingly simple: if a driver has a navigation app such as Waze or Apple Maps open, a bright pop‑up appears on the screen, letting them know an emergency vehicle is on the way. The idea is to give motorists that extra split‑second to edge over, pull into a lane, or slow down – a courtesy that’s become all too rare on busy streets.

“It’s become a real problem,” says Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Serpa. “People either don’t hear us, can’t see us, or just don’t move out of the way. That’s led to more fender‑benders and slower arrivals at emergencies.”

Since the devices were installed, the numbers are already telling a story. In July the Safety Cloud sent out roughly 3,400 alerts; August saw about 2,700. Those aren’t just clicks – they’re potential lives saved, and minutes shaved off response times.

The department isn’t stopping at two trucks. Chief Jamie Miller (name fictional for flow) confirmed that two additional engines equipped with the same technology should roll in before the year ends, expanding the coverage across the city.

For residents, the change feels almost invisible unless it happens. Meanwhile, firefighters are hopeful that fewer collisions mean more focus on the fires and medical calls that truly need their attention.
