Tripura Declares One-Day State Mourning for Late DGP Anurag Dhankar

The Cabinet of Tripura met on Tuesday and, after a brief moment of silence, announced a one‑day state mourning to mark the sudden loss of Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar. The decision, shared by the chief minister’s office, means the national flag will fly at half‑mast on all government buildings and no official entertainment programmes will be held on the day.

Anurag Dhankar, a 1994‑batch IPS officer of the Tripura cadre, entered the service in 1995. Over three decades he rose through the ranks – from Sub‑Divisional Police Officer to the top post of DGP – earning respect for his professionalism, integrity and a clear vision for policing.

His career was not confined to the state. Dhankar served in the United Nations Mission in Kosovo, took up significant responsibilities with the Central Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Police Research and Development, and the Central Industrial Security Force. Such assignments, the cabinet noted, reflected his competence at both national and international levels.

In recognition of his meritorious work, he was awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service. The cabinet’s condolence resolution praised his “unwavering commitment to public service” and called his death an “irreparable loss” for the state and the nation.

Family members, colleagues and citizens alike have been urged to remember Dhankar not just for the medals that adorned his uniform, but for the quiet dedication he displayed every day on the beat.
