Tragic Assault on Manipuri Musician in Delhi Leaves Family in Mourning

New Delhi – On the night of September 6, a quiet residential lane in Kilokari turned into a scene of horror when a group of youths allegedly assaulted 54‑year‑old Manipuri musician Chongtham Vikram Singh. According to the FIR filed by his son, Yaiphaba Singh, four or five men kicked and punched the musician while he was stepping out of his house.

Yaiphaba says he was inside with his mother, Jochia, and a neighbour when he heard his father’s shouted cries around 11:30 p.m. He rushed to the door, only to find the attackers surrounding his father. The boy raised an alarm, and the assailants fled, but not before he caught a glimpse of their faces. He believes he could identify them if they were later brought before him.

In a hurried effort to get help, Yaiphaba, his mother and a neighbour named Rado bundled Vikram Singh into a taxi and rushed him to Holy Family Hospital. During the ride, Singh allegedly told his son that the men had come from a dhaba opposite their residence and had previously threatened him after he complained about the noise they were making.

Inside the taxi, the musician reportedly fainted. He was admitted to the hospital, but despite medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

The FIR notes that Singh, a professional musician, had been away from his career for the past seven to eight years, largely staying at home. The family, originally from Imphal, Manipur, is now left grappling with a sudden, violent loss. Yaiphaba, who is pursuing a BA LLB at Asian Law College, Noida, has asked police to pursue strict legal action against those responsible.

Delhi Police have opened an investigation, seeking to locate and apprehend the alleged youths. The case highlights concerns over safety in residential neighborhoods and the need for swift justice for victims of unprovoked violence.
