Tragedy Unfolds: Medical Negligence Claims Mother's Life Months After Childbirth

In a heart-wrenching tale of alleged medical negligence, a 30-year-old woman, Sangeeta Devi, from Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh, has tragically succumbed to complications eight months after giving birth. The devastating cause? A surgical bandage reportedly left inside her body during delivery, leading to excruciating pain, infection, and ultimately, her untimely demise.

The horrifying ordeal began eight months ago when Sangeeta underwent childbirth.

Following the delivery, she experienced persistent and severe pain, accompanied by a foul discharge from her body. Her husband, Anil Kumar, recounted their desperate struggle, moving from one doctor to another in search of a diagnosis and relief for his suffering wife. Despite their relentless efforts, Sangeeta's condition continued to deteriorate, her agony growing with each passing day.

The grim truth finally came to light during an operation performed at a private hospital in Varanasi.

During the procedure, doctors made a shocking discovery: a surgical bandage, which should have been removed, was lodged inside Sangeeta's body. This egregious oversight was identified as the root cause of her prolonged suffering and the severe infection that had ravaged her system.

Upon learning of the appalling negligence, Sangeeta's distraught family promptly filed a complaint with the police.

Acting swiftly on the family's accusations, authorities in Sonbhadra have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Dr. Ritu Garg, the doctor allegedly responsible for the delivery. The case has been filed under Section 304A of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to causing death by negligence.

The gravity of the situation has prompted a high-level response from the administration.

District Magistrate Chandan Kumar has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident, emphasizing the need for a thorough and impartial inquiry. In line with this directive, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr. Ramesh Singh has constituted a three-member committee. This committee is tasked with meticulously examining the circumstances surrounding Sangeeta Devi's delivery and subsequent death, ensuring that all aspects of the alleged negligence are brought to light.
