Tragedy Strikes Vaishno Devi: PM Modi Leads Nation in Mourning as Stampede Claims Lives

A somber start to the new year unfolded at the revered Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir, as a devastating stampede in the early hours of January 1, 2022, claimed the lives of at least 12 pilgrims and left over a dozen injured. The tragic incident occurred amidst an immense rush of devotees, many of whom were celebrating the arrival of the New Year at the holy site.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing his profound grief, led the nation in mourning.

"Extremely saddened by the loss of lives due to a stampede at Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon," PM Modi tweeted, conveying his deepest sympathies. He further assured that he was in constant touch with Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and other officials, closely monitoring the relief and rescue operations.

In a gesture of immediate support, the Prime Minister announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of those who lost their lives.

The injured would receive Rs 50,000. Additionally, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh for the deceased and Rs 2 lakh for the injured, emphasizing the government's commitment to supporting the victims' families.

Reports indicated that the stampede occurred near gate number 3, outside the sanctum sanctorum, around 2:45 AM, following a heavy influx of devotees and an alleged altercation that escalated the situation.

Emergency services were immediately mobilized, with police, medical teams, and the CRPF swiftly initiating rescue operations. The injured were rushed to Narayana Hospital and other medical facilities, where they are currently receiving treatment.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, deeply saddened by the incident, ordered a high-level inquiry to ascertain the exact cause and circumstances leading to the tragedy.

The committee, headed by the Principal Secretary (Home), with ADGP Jammu and Divisional Commissioner Jammu as members, has been tasked with submitting its report within a week. This move underscores the government's resolve to ensure accountability and prevent such incidents in the future.

Union Ministers, Chief Ministers, and political leaders from across the spectrum also extended their condolences, expressing shock and sorrow over the loss of lives.

The incident serves as a painful reminder of the challenges in managing massive gatherings at pilgrimage sites and highlights the critical need for enhanced safety protocols and crowd management strategies to protect devotees.
