Tragedy Strikes Uttar Pradesh: Multiple House Collapses Claim Six Lives

On Sunday, September 6, 2026, relentless monsoon showers turned a quiet morning in Uttar Pradesh into a scene of heartbreak. In the village of Hirni, Kanpur district, the thatched roof of a modest kutcha house gave way around 11 a.m., burying an entire family under mud and timber.

Rescue crews, fire‑tenders and a few determined neighbours scrambled to pull the debris apart. When they finally lifted the rubble, four people were already beyond help – the father, Mukesh Kumar, and his three young daughters, Maya (17), Neetu (7) and Pallavi (5). A fifth daughter, Kajal, survived with serious injuries and was rushed to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital in Kanpur for treatment.

Just a few kilometres away, in Budaun district, a farmer’s night turned fatal when a wall of his home collapsed under the weight of water‑slickened earth. He was crushed instantly; his wife, though alive, suffered grave injuries and was taken to the district hospital.

The nightmare didn’t stop there. In the early hours of the same day, a six‑year‑old girl named Sunita was crushed by a mud wall that toppled in Naferpur village, Ballia district. She died on the spot, leaving a grieving community behind.

Local police said they deployed three fire tenders, a mobile disaster‑response vehicle and a team of officers to the Kanpur site. The exact cause of the structural failures is still under investigation, but heavy, continuous rain has been singled out as a prime factor.

Adding to the anguish, the victim’s cousin from Hirni alleged that the family had repeatedly called the Saadh police station after the collapse, but their pleas went unanswered. Villagers claim they had to mount a two‑hour rescue effort on their own before official help arrived.

Authorities have promised a thorough inquiry and have urged residents to report unsafe structures, especially as the monsoon season continues. Meanwhile, families across three districts are left to mourn, and the question of accountability looms large.
