Tragedy Strikes Safdarjung Enclave: One Dead, Four Injured in Devastating Basement Collapse

A tragic incident unfolded on Thursday morning in Delhi's upscale Safdarjung Enclave, where a basement collapse at a construction site claimed the life of one labourer and left four others severely injured. The devastating event, which occurred around 9:30 AM in B-6 block, has sent shockwaves through the community and highlighted critical concerns about construction safety.

According to Delhi Fire Services (DFS) officials, seven calls were received reporting the collapse, prompting an immediate and extensive rescue operation.

Three fire tenders, along with multiple ambulances and police teams, rushed to the scene to provide aid and manage the crisis. The initial reports indicated that at least five labourers were trapped under the debris.

The deceased has been identified as 33-year-old Ram Avatar, a resident of Uttar Pradesh.

Avatar was pronounced dead upon arrival at Safdarjung Hospital. The four injured, identified as Brij Mohan (30), Pramod (28), and two others whose identities are yet to be fully confirmed, are currently receiving medical treatment for their injuries. Their condition is being closely monitored by doctors.

Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos and panic as the basement, part of an ongoing construction project, suddenly gave way.

Local residents and fellow workers immediately raised the alarm, initiating a desperate attempt to free those trapped before emergency services arrived. The swift response from the DFS and police was crucial in preventing further casualties and beginning the arduous task of clearing the rubble.

A senior police officer confirmed that a case has been registered under sections 288 (negligent conduct with respect to pulling down or repairing buildings) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code at the Safdarjung Enclave police station.

Investigations are currently underway to determine the exact cause of the collapse and to identify any individuals or entities responsible for potential negligence. This incident serves as a grim reminder of the inherent dangers in construction work and the paramount need for stringent safety protocols and regular inspections to prevent such heartbreaking occurrences in the future.
