Tragedy Strikes Pontiac Block Party: Young Man Killed, Suspect Surrenders

What began as a summer block party on Mariva Street in Pontiac turned into a night of heartbreak on July 25. Roughly a hundred neighbors, friends, and family members had gathered in the 80‑block of Mariva, laughing and sharing food under the streetlights. Then, a sudden burst of gunfire shattered the festivities.

Multiple 911 calls flooded the sheriff’s office, each reporting a man lying motionless on the ground after a shot to the head. Deputies pushed through a dense crowd of partygoers and a maze of parked cars, finally finding the victim and rushing to render aid. Despite their best efforts, the young man—identified later as a 23‑year‑old resident of Waterford Township—was taken to McLaren Oakland Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Almost as quickly as the tragedy unfolded, a 23‑year‑old Pontiac resident stepped forward. He told deputies he was responsible for the shooting and mentioned he held a Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL). The suspect was taken into custody without incident; his firearm was seized and will serve as evidence.

He now sits in the Oakland County Jail while investigators continue to piece together what happened.
