Tragedy Strikes North York: Four Pedestrians Critically Injured in Horrific Yonge Street Collision

A tranquil Friday evening in North York was shattered by a devastating collision that left four pedestrians, including two children, with severe injuries. The incident unfolded around 9:40 p.m. at the busy intersection of Yonge Street and Wedgewood Drive, transforming a routine night into a scene of chaos and urgent rescue efforts.

Toronto Police Service traffic services reported that a silver Hyundai sedan, travelling northbound on Yonge Street, allegedly sped through a red light.

Simultaneously, a black Toyota Camry, heading westbound on Wedgewood Drive, was making a left turn onto southbound Yonge Street with a green light. The catastrophic impact between the two vehicles propelled the Hyundai onto the sidewalk, directly into the path of innocent pedestrians.

Among the injured were a 14-year-old girl and an adult woman, both of whom sustained critical, life-threatening injuries.

Two other victims, a 12-year-old girl and another adult woman, suffered serious but thankfully non-life-threatening injuries. All four were rushed to a trauma centre, their lives irrevocably altered by the split-second chain of events.

Emergency crews, including paramedics and firefighters, swarmed the scene, providing immediate medical attention and securing the area.

The gravity of the situation prompted extensive road closures, with Yonge Street between Steeles Avenue East and Clark Avenue West, and Wedgewood Drive between Yonge Street and Hilda Avenue, remaining inaccessible for hours as investigators meticulously pieced together the sequence of events.

Both drivers involved in the collision remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.

The 40-year-old man behind the wheel of the Hyundai and the 39-year-old man driving the Camry are now central to the ongoing investigation. Authorities are appealing to witnesses, particularly those with dashcam or security camera footage from the vicinity, to come forward with any information that could shed light on this tragic event.
