Tragedy Strikes Karnataka: Nine Lives Lost as Truck Plows into Ganpati Procession

A pall of sorrow has descended upon Karnataka following a horrific incident where a truck tragically collided with a Ganpati idol immersion procession, claiming the lives of nine devotees and leaving several others injured. The devastating accident unfolded in the early hours of Monday in the Karadagi village of Shiggaon taluk, Haveri district, casting a dark shadow over the festive atmosphere.

Eyewitnesses described a scene of utter chaos and heartbreak as the truck, reportedly veering out of control, plowed into the crowd.

The impact was immediate and catastrophic, leaving a trail of devastation and despair. The devotees were in the midst of their sacred ritual, celebrating the culmination of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, when their joyous procession turned into a site of profound grief.

Local police and emergency services swiftly responded to the scene, but for nine individuals, help came too late.

They succumbed to their injuries on the spot or shortly thereafter. Several others, gravely wounded, were rushed to nearby hospitals where they are currently receiving urgent medical attention. The identities of the deceased and injured are being meticulously ascertained, bringing further sorrow to their respective families and communities.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his deep anguish and condolences over the tragic loss of life.

In a statement, he conveyed his heartfelt sympathies to the families who have lost their loved ones in this unforeseen calamity. Demonstrating the state's commitment to supporting the victims, CM Siddaramaiah promptly announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased person.

Furthermore, he assured that the state government would bear all expenses for the medical treatment of the injured, ensuring they receive comprehensive care without financial burden.
