Tragedy Strikes High Desert: Inmate's Death Ruled Homicide, Investigation Underway

SUSANVILLE, Calif. – A somber cloud hangs over High Desert State Prison in Susanville as authorities confirm the tragic death of inmate Jose Raul Alcantar has been officially ruled a homicide. The 34-year-old was found unresponsive in his cell last week, prompting a swift and serious investigation that has now identified his cellmate as the primary suspect.

Alcantar was discovered by correctional staff in his shared cell on the evening of May 28, 2024, at approximately 10:15 p.m.

Despite immediate efforts by medical personnel, he was pronounced dead less than an hour later, at 10:59 p.m. The Lassen County Coroner's office has since concluded that Alcantar's death was indeed a homicide, casting a grim light on the events within the high-security facility.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) has named 43-year-old Guillermo Campos, Alcantar's cellmate, as the alleged perpetrator.

Campos, who arrived at High Desert State Prison in July 2023, is serving a lengthy sentence of 31 years to life with the possibility of parole. His conviction stems from serious charges including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and assault with a deadly weapon, originating from San Bernardino County.

Jose Raul Alcantar, a Los Angeles County transplant, had been at High Desert since December 2023.

He was serving a 14-year sentence for various offenses, including carjacking, second-degree robbery, and assault with a deadly weapon. His unexpected death within the confines of the prison walls has ignited a comprehensive inquiry.

A multi-agency investigation is now in full swing, spearheaded by the CDCR's Investigative Services Unit, High Desert State Prison investigators, and the Lassen County District Attorney’s Office.
