Tragedy on the Bronx Street: 12‑Year‑Old Killed as Gunfire Rips Through Bodega Crowd

On a warm Saturday evening around 5:30 p.m., the quiet hum of traffic on Elliot Place near the Grand Concourse was shattered by a sudden burst of gunfire. Witnesses say a brawl involving about half a dozen men broke out right in front of the Wanda Deli Grocery, and within seconds bullets started ripping through the air.

The most heartbreaking moment captured on security cameras was that of a 12‑year‑old boy, the son of an NYPD sergeant, stepping out of the deli after buying a small ball. He hopped onto his bike, waved a quick hello to a neighbor, and then – as the fight intensified – a stray round slammed straight into his chest.

Family members who arrived at the scene recount the boy stumbling off his bike, clutching his shoulder, and collapsing on the deli’s front counter. A frantic mother tried to comfort a crying baby in a stroller while others ducked for cover.

Police say two other men were hit – a 25‑year‑old in the buttocks and a 34‑year‑old in the foot. Both were rushed to Bronx Lebanon Hospital and are now listed in stable condition.

Emergency responders whisked the youngster to Lincoln Hospital, but despite all efforts, he was pronounced dead on arrival. The loss hit especially hard because his father, a sergeant with the NYPD, was away in Connecticut at the time and rushed back as soon as he heard the news.

“He was just a good kid, loved riding his bike, always said hi to everybody,” said his uncle, Julio Lopez, who was walking his dogs nearby when the shots rang out. “He showed respect, he was a free spirit – it’s hard to believe he’s gone.”

Investigators have yet to determine who fired the shots or who was the intended target. The suspects fled the scene in a black BMW, and no arrests have been made so far. The NYPD continues to canvas the neighborhood for witnesses and is reviewing additional video footage.

Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson posted on X, “My heart is so heavy. A 12‑year‑old life taken in a senseless act of gun violence. I’m outraged, I’m heartbroken, I’m disgusted.” Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the incident a “heinous act” and urged the city to reject the normalization of such violence.

Community leaders are calling for increased safety measures around local businesses and more resources to curb street violence. For now, the family and the neighborhood are left to mourn a young life cut short, and to question how a simple bike ride turned into a fatal tragedy.
