Tragedy on Nostrand Ave: 58‑Year‑Old Man Fatally Struck by MTA Bus

At about 8:15 p.m. on Saturday, a southbound B44 bus was pulling into a stop on Nostrand Avenue near Clarendon Road in Flatbush, Brooklyn. The driver, a 43‑year‑old woman, had the vehicle halted for roughly half a minute when a man stepped off the sidewalk and headed toward the bus.

Witnesses recalled the man looking wobbly, as if he’d had a few too many drinks. By the time he reached the bus, the rear door was already shut, and the vehicle was beginning to inch forward again.

What happened next is still being pieced together. The man made contact with the bus’s side and was struck by the rear wheels. It’s not yet clear whether he was snagged by the moving bus or simply fell and was then run over. What’s certain is that he was rushed to Kings County Hospital, where, despite the efforts of medics, he was pronounced dead.

The bus driver, unaware that anyone had been hit, completed her route as usual. The MTA and NYPD have opened an investigation, and the victim’s name has not been released pending notification of family members.

This heartbreaking incident adds another sobering reminder about the dangers that can arise when pedestrians and transit vehicles intersect, especially late in the evening when visibility and judgment may be compromised.
