Tragedy on Highway 1: BC Man Charged in Fatal Crash that Killed Alberta Child

After months of painstaking investigation following a truly devastating highway collision last summer, authorities have finally laid charges. A man from British Columbia has now been formally accused in connection with the tragic crash that, heartbreakingly, took the life of a 10-year-old Alberta child and left two other individuals seriously injured.

This profoundly sad incident, as many will recall, occurred on July 26, 2022, right there on Highway 1, just a bit east of Brooks, Alberta. RCMP officers from the Eastern Alberta District Rural Crime Reduction Unit have been diligently piecing together the puzzle of what happened that day, and their tireless efforts have, at last, culminated in charges being filed.

Brandon Beauchamp, a 37-year-old resident hailing from Chilliwack, B.C., is now facing some very serious accusations. He's been charged with dangerous driving causing death and, in addition, two counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm. It's a somber and frankly, chilling reminder of just how quickly lives can be altered, irrevocably, on our roads.

According to the initial reports from that fateful day, the collision involved not two, but three vehicles – a bit of a chain reaction, it seems. Police detailed that a semi-truck, which the accused was reportedly driving, was traveling westbound when it sadly struck the rear of a pickup truck. That initial impact, tragically, then pushed the pickup into yet another westbound semi-truck.

The pickup truck, at the center of this terrible sequence of events, was carrying three occupants, and the consequences were dire. A 10-year-old child from Strathmore, Alberta, who was a passenger in that pickup, was pronounced deceased at the scene. And as if that weren't enough, two other individuals from the same vehicle suffered significant, serious injuries, injuries that would undoubtedly have had a profound and lasting impact on their well-being.

Since that awful day, investigators have been meticulously gathering evidence, pouring over details, and working tirelessly to understand exactly what unfolded. All that hard work, the careful reconstruction and analysis, has culminated in these specific charges. Mr. Beauchamp is now expected to make his first appearance in Brooks provincial court on March 27, marking the beginning of what will undoubtedly be a difficult legal journey.
