Tragedy on Elliot Place: 12‑Year‑Old Boy Killed in Bronx Bodega Shooting

At about 5:30 p.m. on a warm summer evening, a quiet corner of the Bronx turned into a chaotic scene when a fight broke out in front of the Wanda Deli Grocery on Elliot Place. Six men were apparently involved, shouting and shoving, and within minutes the situation escalated into gunfire.

Amid the confusion, a 12‑year‑old boy—who happened to be the son of an NYPD sergeant—stopped by the deli to buy a ball. He paid at the counter, hopped onto his bike, and, just moments later, a stray bullet slammed into his chest. The youngster fell off his bike, clutching his wound, and staggered back into the store for help before collapsing at the front counter.

Witnesses say the boy was a “good kid,” known for riding his bike around the neighborhood. His uncle, Julio Lopez, who isn’t a blood relative but calls the boy his nephew, described how he heard the shots while walking his dogs and saw people fleeing. “He was saying hi to the guys up the block, showing respect,” Lopez recalled, voice trembling.

Two other men were hit—one, a 25‑year‑old, took a bullet to the buttocks; the other, a 34‑year‑old, was struck in the foot. Both survived, receiving treatment at Bronx Lebanon Hospital and are listed in stable condition.

The boy was rushed to Lincoln Hospital, but despite the efforts of doctors, he was pronounced dead. His father, Sergeant Luis Lopez, was in Connecticut at the time and rushed to the Bronx after learning what happened.

Police have not yet identified who fired the shots or who was the intended target. The suspects fled the scene in a black BMW, and no arrests have been made so far. The investigation remains active, with detectives combing through surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses.

Local officials expressed outrage. Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson posted on X, saying her “heart is so heavy” and calling the incident “unimaginable pain.” Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the shooting a “heinous act,” emphasizing that children should be able to ride their bikes without fear.

The tragedy has reignited conversations about gun violence in New York City, especially in communities that already feel unsafe. For now, the family, friends, and neighbors are left to mourn a life cut short, while the city seeks answers and, hopefully, accountability.
