Tragedy in Poonch: Heavy Rains Turn Mud House into a Fatal Landslide

When the clouds over Poonch district opened up on Monday, nobody could have guessed the horror that would follow. The rain kept falling, drumming on rooftops and turning the narrow lanes into streams, until a mud‑filled slope finally gave way.

In the small hamlet of Loran, a single mud‑brick house collapsed in a roar of earth and water. Inside were members of one family from nearby Arigam village – a woman, her two small children and several relatives. By the time rescue workers could pry the debris apart, seven lives had been lost, among them four women and two children.

The news spread fast, and within minutes police, army personnel and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were on the ground, digging, shouting, and trying to comfort the distraught neighbours. Local volunteers, familiar with the treacherous terrain, joined the effort, handing out blankets and bottled water while the official teams used hand‑held detectors to locate any trapped bodies.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, visibly shaken, arrived later in the day. He announced an ex‑gratia payment of ₹6 lakh for each of the deceased – ₹4 lakh from the State Disaster Response Fund and an additional ₹2 lakh from his personal relief fund. "We will do everything we can to support the bereaved families," the CM said, his voice breaking momentarily.

The landslide was not an isolated freak accident. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier warned of heavy rainfall, flash floods and potential cloudbursts across several districts, Poonch included. That same weather system also sent a boulder crashing onto a bus near Raggi Nallah on the Jammu‑Kishtwar highway in Doda district, killing two more people.

As night fell, the rescue operation continued under floodlights, the air thick with the smell of wet soil and the faint echo of distant sirens. Families from the affected area have been shifted to temporary shelters, where relief tins are being handed out and volunteers try to keep spirits from sinking too low.

Authorities say they will conduct a detailed post‑mortem of the landslide, looking at slope stability, deforestation patterns and the role of unchecked construction on fragile hillsides. In the meantime, communities are left to mourn, clutching to the hope that the promised compensation will bring at least a sliver of relief.
