Tragedy in North Edmonton: Stolen Forklift Kills Young Man

It was supposed to be just another evening in north Edmonton, but what unfolded turned into a heartbreaking scene that no one expected.

According to the Edmonton Police Service, a 20‑year‑old man lost his life when a forklift—reported as stolen—took a sudden, violent turn while three men were on board. The vehicle, which is normally confined to warehouses and construction sites, ended up barreling through a residential street, striking the young man and leaving him dead at the scene.

Police say the three men were riding the forklift together, a practice that is both illegal and incredibly unsafe. One of the riders managed to jump clear before the forklift slammed into the victim, but the impact was too severe for the 20‑year‑old.

First‑responders arrived quickly, but there was little they could do. The victim was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after being rushed in. Neighbours described the incident as a “shock” and expressed deep concern over how a piece of industrial equipment could end up on a public road.

Detectives are now treating the case as a serious criminal investigation. The stolen forklift has been recovered, and the two surviving riders are being held for questioning. Authorities are exploring charges that could include dangerous operation of a vehicle, aggravated assault, and theft.

Mayor Amarjeet Sohi released a statement urging residents to report any suspicious activity involving heavy machinery and reminding the public that “our streets are meant for cars and pedestrians, not forklifts.” He also highlighted ongoing efforts to combat equipment theft across the city.

Community leaders are calling for greater awareness about the dangers of tampering with industrial equipment. A local outreach program plans to hold an informational session next week, aimed at both youths and adults, to discuss the legal and safety ramifications of such reckless behavior.

As the investigation unfolds, the city mourns the loss of a young life and hopes that this tragedy will serve as a stark reminder of the importance of respecting public safety rules.
