Tragedy in Delhi's Satya Niketan: Building Collapse Claims Three Lives, Prime Minister Modi Voices Deep Grief

On Sunday night, a private building in the Satya Niketan neighbourhood of Delhi gave way, sending plaster and steel crashing down on the streets near Delhi University’s South Campus. The sudden collapse left three people dead and a handful injured, prompting an immediate outpouring of grief from leaders and citizens alike.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) within hours, describing the incident as “distressing” and offering his condolences to the families of the victims. “The collapse of a building at Satya Niketan, Delhi is distressing. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones,” the PM’s office posted. He also prayed for a swift recovery for the injured and thanked the rescuers who were already at work.

Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi echoed the sentiment, saying he had spoken directly with Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. “Deeply saddened by the news of the private building collapse in Satya Niketan, near Delhi University’s South Campus. I have spoken to CM Rekha Gupta, who is personally monitoring the situation and has assured me that all necessary rescue and relief measures are being undertaken expeditiously,” he wrote.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta arrived at the AIIMS Trauma Centre shortly after the collapse, meeting doctors and the rescued individuals who were being treated. She confirmed that teams from Delhi Police, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the Delhi Fire Service were on the ground, working round‑the‑clock to locate anyone still trapped.

According to Delhi Police, nine people have been rescued so far, but three lives were lost. The authorities continue to comb through the rubble, hoping to find any survivors and to bring closure to the families affected.

The incident has reignited discussions about building safety and enforcement of construction norms in the capital. While investigations are underway, officials say they are focusing on immediate relief—providing medical care, shelter, and counseling for the victims and their relatives.
