Tragedy at IIT Bombay: Student’s Suicide After ChatGPT Incident Sparks Campus Protests

A second‑year student from the Department of Energy Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay was found dead in his hostel room on Friday evening. According to the institute’s statement, the tragedy unfolded after the young man was caught using his mobile phone during an exam and uploading the question paper to ChatGPT to obtain answers.

College officials say the incident was discovered earlier that day. The instructor and the head of the department intervened, spoke with the student and assured him that no disciplinary action would be taken and that his academic record would remain unaffected. After this counselling session, the student returned to his room.

Later that night, campus authorities discovered his lifeless body. IIT Bombay expressed deep sorrow, offering support to the bereaved classmates, faculty members and anyone else shaken by the loss. The institute also said that the circumstances surrounding the death are being examined by the appropriate authorities.

The news quickly sparked a late‑night protest on the campus.
