Tragedy at Capitola Mall: 73‑Year‑Old Woman Killed in Random Stabbing

On Monday afternoon, around 12:45 p.m., the quiet hum of shoppers at Capitola Mall was shattered by a shocking scene. Officers from the Capitola Police Department were dispatched after a frantic 911 call reported a stabbing near the food‑court exit.

When they arrived, they found the victim—a 73‑year‑old woman identified as Rachell Summers—lying on Clares Street, just across the parking lot from Macy’s west exit. She had sustained multiple stab wounds. First‑responders from the Central Fire District of Santa Cruz County and American Medical Response rushed to her side, but despite their efforts, she died at the scene.

Within minutes, detectives spotted a young man about half a mile away, in the 1400 block of 41st Avenue. The 19‑year‑old was taken into custody and is now being held without bail on suspicion of murder, as well as an alleged felony committed while he was out on bail for a prior case. Police are holding back his name until formal arraignment.
