Toddler and Man Hospitalized After Fresno Birthday Party Shooting

On Saturday night, around 10:14 p.m., the calm of a birthday party in central Fresno was shattered by a sudden burst of gunfire. Officers from the Fresno Police Department were dispatched after a ShotSpotter alert went off near Washington Avenue, east of First Street.

When they arrived, they learned that two victims – a 1‑year‑old child and a 30‑year‑old man – had already been rushed to the hospital by family members. The little one suffered a single gunshot wound to the leg; thankfully, doctors say it isn’t life‑threatening. The adult was hit lower on his body and sustained serious injuries, but he is expected to recover.

The suspect, 39‑year‑old Paul Benefield of Fresno, was found inside the home with cuts and bruises on his face and head. According to detectives, Benefield and the adult victim had gotten into an argument during the celebration. In the heat of the moment, Benefidge brandished a handgun and opened fire, striking the man multiple times.

During the chaos, the toddler was struck by a stray bullet. Several party guests bravely tried to subdue Benefield and wrestle the gun away, which likely caused the injuries to his face and head. He was arrested at the scene and is now receiving medical treatment for his own wounds.

Once he’s cleared for transport, Benefield will be booked at Fresno County Jail and faces two counts of assault with a deadly weapon. Police continue to investigate the incident and are asking anyone with additional information to come forward.
