Three Rescued After Boat Capsizes on the Delaware River Near New Hope

On a bright Saturday afternoon, a group of friends set out for a relaxing float down the Delaware River just outside New Hope, Pennsylvania. The water was calm, the sky clear, and the mood was upbeat—until a sudden wave, perhaps spurred by a passing motorboat, tipped their small vessel.

Within minutes the boat was upside‑down, splashing water everywhere and sending the occupants scrambling for the edge. Panic rose quickly, but fortunately the nearby riverbank was home to a few alert onlookers who raised the alarm. Within moments, the U.S. Coast Guard, joined by New Hope’s fire department and local volunteers, arrived on scene.

Rescuers worked methodically, pulling the three passengers—two adults and a teenage child—out of the cold water. All three were conscious, though visibly shaken, and were wrapped in thermal blankets as they were escorted to a waiting ambulance. Medical personnel on site confirmed they suffered only minor hypothermia and a few bruises, nothing life‑threatening.

“We’re grateful for the swift response from the Coast Guard and our community volunteers,” said Mayor Karen Mitchell of New Hope. “Incidents like this remind us that even a peaceful day on the river can turn dangerous in an instant, and it’s crucial everyone knows the safety protocols.”

The Coast Guard’s spokesperson, Lieutenant Aaron Patel, added that the river’s current can be deceptively strong, especially near narrow channels. He urged boaters to wear life jackets at all times, keep a watchful eye on weather changes, and avoid overloading small craft.

Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported, and the rescued individuals were released from the hospital later that evening. The capsized boat was later recovered and taken to a local marina for inspection.
